Approximately 10 to 12% of the population is unable to study or read properly because of problems with light sensitivity. In other words, Irlen Syndrome is a problem of perception. Until now, this anomaly has troubled teachers and the scientific world because it cannot be discovered by standardised performance, visual and medical tests.
People who suffer from Irlen Syndrome see the printed page and sometimes even their environment differently. They are constantly forced to adapt or compensate.
They are unaware of the extra effort required to read or study.
People with Irlen Syndrome read slowly and inefficiently, have limited comprehension
or are subject to tension and fatigue. Irlen Syndrome can also affect the length of concentration, listening, energy levels, motivation, productivity and mental health.
Individuals with Irlen Syndrome are sometimes regarded as sub-gifted or as people who have a behavioural problem, or as people with attitudinal and emotional problems. These problems may coexist with other learning problems. People with learning problems, dyslexia or attention problems may also have attention problems may also suffer from Irlen Syndrome.
